Don Gilbert, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2026, at the age of 85 after a battle with cancer. His family grieves his passing but rejoices that he is home with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Born on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 1940, Don was raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He enjoyed all Pittsburgh sports teams, especially the Steelers. He served in the United States Marines and later worked for many years as a transit bus driver for the Pittsburgh Port Authority.

In 1973, Don surrendered his life to Jesus Christ. That moment changed the course of his life. Over the next 50+ years, God’s grace transformed Don from a tough, independent man into a warm, gentle, compassionate servant. His life became a testimony to the power of the gospel.

Don’s deepest earthly love was his wife, Liz. Their 64-year marriage was marked by devotion, loyalty, and inseparable companionship. His love for Jesus shaped the way he loved her and served his family.

More than anything, Don longed for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren to know the unconditional love of Jesus and to rest in the same grace that changed his life.

Don’s life reflected the verse he treasured, Romans 10:13: “Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

He is survived by his beloved wife, Liz; his children, Michael (Melanie), Linda (Rob), and Dave (Dawn); his grandchildren; and his great-grandchildren.

A private family memorial will be held to celebrate his life and the extraordinary grace that defined it.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Don’s memory to the OhioHealth Foundation in gratitude for the compassionate hospice care he received.
